Recent Valuations

Valuations of the works of Joseph Vilella are done upon request of the collectors or at Vilella’s preference. In addition to providing an accurate value of a given piece or pieces, such valuations provide a general sense how Vilella’s art is valued as a function of time.

In order to ensure consistency and accuracy, Vilella has developed an algorithm that takes into consideration the age, original price, complexity by type, and size of any given piece. Based on the combination of those factors, the algorithm provides a percentage of yearly valuation that is used to calculate the value of the art pieces as a function of time. ” Creating this valuation algorithm took many hours of thought process and re-shaping. There had to be a sound mathematical logic to the numbers in order to produce a fair and accurate value of each piece.”

What follows is the background and 2022 valuation of selected pieces:

Floating Cubes – 2001

2022 Valuation – $105,617

“Floating Cubes” is the signature piece of Vilella’s early geometric period and one of the most difficult pieces he has painted. A total of 69 squares and 3 cubes had to be painted free hand on a 24″ by 48″ canvas. It required two to three coats of high quality acrylic paint per facet. The square facets had to be placed in the canvas with precise symmetry. The space between them and the sides of the canvas had to be painted after the facets were painted using two coats of Titanium White acrylic. It took approximately 3 months to finish the piece.

Majestic – 2007

2020 Valuation – $70,441

“Majestic” is a very colorful and interesting piece in the 36″ by 60″ format. Because of its color composition and form, it truly commands the attention of its viewers. From its vibrant background colors combination, to the exacting detail of its small marbles falling into space, it draws the viewer eyes and dominates the space where it is placed on.

Semi Geo Comp # 4 – 2006

2022 Valuation – $78,671

“Semi Geometric Composition # 4” is a seemingly simple yet, the second most challenging piece that Vilella has completed. This is due to the fact that the piece had originally been painted for Vilella’s 2005 Solo Show as “Squiggles in White”. In it, all the curvy shapes he referred to as squiggles had been painted over a previously finished Titanium White background. The following year, Vilella decided to make it more interesting and thus, challenging, by painting the 8 color bars in the background. He accomplished this by accurately and painstakingly navigating free hand around the original details of the 153 squiggles!

Trilogy – 2007

2022 Valuation – $84,848

“Trilogy” was the first piece that Vilella painted within a multi-colored purple and black background consistent of 3 hues of purple and 4 hues of black acrylic. This 36″ by 60″ piece is comprised of a three triangles with complex geometric facets. The top triangle with its strong facets and hues represents a man. The bottom triangle with its rounded curves and softer hues represent a woman. The middle triangle with its combination of both represents their Creator. Vilella, who is a deeply religious person, created this piece to honor his God and Creator.

Strength and Kindness – 2007

2022 Valuation – $71,813

“Strength and Kindness” is a 36″ by 60″ piece that evolved out of a simpler piece set in a light green background. Vilella painted the original piece in 2006. In 2007 Vilella decided to improve it and while doing so, he was listening to the music of Le Miserables. That beautiful music inspired the changes to the piece and its title.

Reflections – 2002

2022 Valuation – $70,299

The significance of this 24″ by 48″ work is that it is a transitional piece. With “Reflections” Vilella started his departure from his pure cubist stage and expanded into other geometries. This would ultimately lead him to his semi and pure geometric series. The key to this piece is the subtle transition from three cubes to more linear and rounded figures that ultimately will lead to “Planets”. Square and cube geometries such as those of “Floating Cubes”, “Gifts”, “Asteroid”, and “Collisions” clearly dominated his early geometric phase.

Seeking Truth – 2009

2022 Valuation – $48,247

In the year 2009, Lance Armstrong, which at the time was the hero of USA Cycling, was making his late career Tour de France comeback. Vilella, who was a serious cyclist that trained and competed in time trials, decided to paint “Seeking Truth” to honor Armstrong. Every part of Seeking Truth has a meaning. The rider position portrays the aerodynamic tuck of a time trial, which is the most grueling and painful event in cycling. The lines behind the cyclist and his bike give the painting a sense of speed. The time trial is called the race of truth, because the rider competes solely against himself and the clock. Thus, the title “Seeking Truth”. The colors of the jersey, helmet and shorts of the rider are those of team Astana, which was Armstrong’s team in 2009. The black sock shown on the rider’s outside leg has a white Nike logo. Armstrong was the only racer wearing Nike socks in the 2009 Tour de France. The yellow wheel represents his seven previous first place victories at the Tour de France. The colors of the back wheel represent the colors of the US Postal Service team. This was the team with which he won the seven Tours. Even years after Armstrong fell from grace, Seeking Truth is still one of Vilella’s most popular paintings.

Obelisk – 2009

2022 Valuation – $86,388

“Obelisk” is a piece that symbolizes the Operatic arts. Within its 48″ by 60″ canvas you see an imposing almost 3 by 2 feet obelisk gracefully floating in space. In its top facets, represented via color, are the range of emotions portrayed in the Opera. The bottom facets represent the actor with its masculine lines and hues. If you look closely you will notice a marching soldier. The side facets represent the gentle female essence of the Opera actress. In its middle, the eye of a female mask portrayed.

Avant Garde – 2005

2022 Valuation – $94,367

“Avant Garde” is a sculpture made out of aerospace and defense grade T-6066 aluminum. Its base is hard anodized. Its facets are painted with a two step air brush technique developed by Vilella. This technique produces vibrant color hues. “Avant Garde” was designed to represent High Fashion. Its pearly colors combined with the vibrant ones exude the beauty and sophistication it attempts to portray.

Mira’s Spin Bike – 2020

2022 Valuation – $17,222

Vilella was an indoor cycling instructor from 2010 to 2020. Once Covid-19 hit the world his spin classes were no longer offered. Mira Dover was one of Vilella’s most faithful and high energy students. She is also a great friend. Since she couldn’t do the spin classes anymore, Vilella painted “Mira’s Spin Bike” for her in remembrance of a past where tough spin workouts were the norm, not the exception.

Shapes- 2005

2022 Valuation – $100,709

Made with the same aerospace and defense aluminum and painted with the special air brushing technique developed by Vilella, “Shapes” was designed to evoke the essence of the military services.

Geo Composition # 1 – 2003

2022 Valuation – $75,828

This piece is the first of its kind and signaled the move of Vilella from the semi geometric towards the pure abstract geometries. Although in the future, “Majestic” and “Strength and Kindness” will continue to have geometries in combination with fluid form accents, those will be the last painting of this type. Paintings like “Trilogy”, “Obelisk”, “Seeking Truth”, “Sudoku” and “Mira’s Spin Bike” will dominate Vilella’s art.

Essence – 2005

2022 Valuation – $94,323

“Essence” was a sculpture designed to mostly evoke the pure geometric style of the 2003 “Geometric Composition # 1” art piece. There is only one fluid form within it. The single light green streamer makes it a transitional piece from the semi to the pure geometries. This vibrant sculpture is also made with the same aerospace and defense aluminum and was painted with the special air brushing technique developed by Vilella.

Semi Geo Comp # 1 – 2003

2022 Valuation – $75,118

With “Semi Geometric Composition # 1” Vilella starts experimenting with geometric and fluid forms. This style was a throwback to the Art of Vasily Kandinsky, an early modern art painter that Vilella truly admired.

Planets – 2002

Valuation – $60,826

This 36″ by 36″ piece clearly signaled the departure of Vilella’s cubist stage. Even though Vilella didn’t completely abandoned the cubes and expanded on them in future geometric series, they would be accents to some of his pieces. This was the case in “Majestic” and “Strength and Kindness”. He did use them in a more predominant, yet balanced way in “Oops”, which was the 2005 piece which he painted for his main collector, Mrs. Janice Ephron.
